Statement by ECOWAS Commission President In the wake of the heavy downpour in Cote d’Ivoire on 18 and 19 June 2018

The heavy rains that hit Cote d’Ivoire on 18 and 19 June 2018 resulted in a number of casualties, caused considerable material damage and left many injured, especially in Abidjan.

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sympathises with the Ivorian people at this trying moment. It commends the exemplary courage and great mobilisation shown by all sections of the population.

The Commission acknowledges the speed with which the Government took urgent steps to respond to the situation, in particular with regard to the effective organisation of emergency relief and prompt treatment of the injured.

The Commission President conveys his heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of Cote d’Ivoire and assures them of ECOWAS’ utmost solidarity. He bows to the memory of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.
