Joint communique UN – AU – ECOWAS on Cote d’Ivoire
 

Abidjan, 18 May 2017 – A joint high-level mission of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), African Union (AU) and United Nations visited Cote d’Ivoire on 17 May 2017, against the backdrop of the mutiny which threatened to exacerbate social tension and undermine of the successful economic relaunch of Cote d’Ivoire.

The mission, comprising the President of Ecowas Commission, Marcel A. de Souza, Senior Minister and Secretary General in the Office of the President of Guinea, Kiridi Bangoura, representative of the AU Chairperson, Prof. Alpha Condé and the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, was received by the Alassane Ouattara, President of Cote d’Ivoire.

The mission expressed its total support for President Alassane Ouattara, the Ivorian Government and people in the difficult times being experienced by the country. It also congratulated the President of the Republic for the manifest wisdom which led to the quick and peaceful resolution of the demands of the mutineers.

Ecowas, AU and United Nations revealed concern over the use of violence during the recent happenings and reiterated their commitment to the use of dialogue and legal channels as the sole means for the resolution of disputes.

In that regard, the mission welcomes the agreement reached, which demonstrates the will of the Ivorian Government headed by President Ouattara, to find solutions through dialogue, in order to guarantee the rights of all and the stability of the country.

Cote d’Ivoire is a major country in the region and should continue to serve as a model of stability and economic development. It is important that peace remains the priority, in addressing tensions that may compromise the foundations of economic expansion and the emergence of Cote d’Ivoire.

Ecowas, AU and United Nations express sincere condolences to the grieving families which have suffered loss due to the events and wish the wounded swift recovery.

Ecowas, AU and United Nations will continue to support Cote d’Ivoire in safeguarding peace and stability.
