ECOWAS welcomes the solemn signing of the charter of the transition and the appointment of H.E MICHEL KAFANDO as Transitional President in BURKINA FASO
The current Chairman of ECOWAS, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana welcomes the signing of the Transitional Charter on 16 November, and the designation on 17 November 2014 of H.E Michel KAFANDO as Transitional President.
These acts demonstrate once again the will of the people of Burkina Faso, its national stakeholders and its defense and security Forces to focus on the best interests of the nation. In this regard, ECOWAS encourages all parties to respect the spirit and letter of the Charter of the Transition during its implementation.
The signing and the entry into force of the Charter as well as the designation of the Transitional President following the lifting of the suspension of the Constitution as a positive development that will pave the way for the establishment of a civilian-led transition to enable a return to normal constitutional life following free, democratic and inclusive elections in accordance with the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
During this transition period, ECOWAS urges the authorities to ensure the safety of all Burkinabe, without exception, and the protection of persons and property.
ECOWAS reiterates its constant readiness and determination to assist in consultation with the African Union, the United Nations and all development partners, the Government and the people of Burkina Faso throughout the duration of the transition for a return to normal constitutional order.
