ECOWAS PARTNERS NCFRMI AND UNHCR TO HONOUR WORLD REFUGEE DAY
The Commissioner of Social Affairs and Gender of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Dr.Siga Fatima Jagne presented a renovated lavatory facility to the Government Secondary School, Garki in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria on 3rd October 2019 in commemoration of the World Refugee day which was on 20th June 2019.
In her remarks at the presentation of the facility, the Commissioner stated that the Government Secondary School, Garki was chosen because Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria also attend the school.
Dr.Jagne further stated that as part of events marking the 2019 World Refugee Day, the ECOWAS Commission in partnership with the Nigerian National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) decided that it is important to sensitize students on issues of displacement.
Addressing the Students of the Government Secondary School, Garki, Commissioner Jagne stressed that, “There is need for youth to imbibe principles that promote peace and security in the region, which will make them good leaders of tomorrow”.
The Principal of the School, Mr.Muhammad Nabayi HarunaMa on his part, appreciated the efforts of the ECOWAS Commission and described the renovation of the lavatory facility as a service to humanity.
In attendance of the presentation was the Director, School Services, Secondary Education Board of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, Dr, Idakwoji Sunday and representatives of NCFRMI and UNHCR.
