ECOWAS Commission President pledges continuous cooperation with IMF and WAMI

In tandem with the provisions of its collaborative framework with partners, sister agencies and institutions, the President of the ECOWAS Commission Marcel de Souza has pledged continuous cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the West African Monetary Institute (WAMI).

The president gave the pledge while conferring separately with the Director-General of WAMI Dr. Ngozi Egbuna as well as IMF’s chief of Mission for Nigeria and African Department Mr. Amine Mati on the 4th of October 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria.

President de Souza stressed that the ECOWAS Commission holds WAMI in high esteem since the integration tasks of the institute are pivotal to meeting the convergence criteria for the attainment of a common currency for the region.

President de Souza noted that the ECOWAS Commission is poised towards working together with WAMI to ensure that a financial system for the region is healthy and sustainable.

Similarly, he told the IMF chief that a transparent and accountable financial system has been put in place at ECOWAS in keeping with international best practices and ensuring that the Commission’s financial books are balanced at all times.

The WAMI Chief Executive had intimated president de Souza that the Institute’s work programme was on course stressing that she is desirous of putting a switch to its payment system and interconnectivity.

She also discussed biometric assistance to aid movement across the region by officials as well as other issues that include the larger ECOWAS monetary cooperation programme and how ECOWAS Institutions are faring relative to the dynamics of the time.

Both senior officials were assured of the Commission’s commitment to existing cooperation and undertakings.
