Commemorating 2022 the International Day for the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula

Commemorating 2022 the International Day for the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula: ECOWAS and UNFPA mobilize actors around prevention and access to care.

As part of the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula 2022), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through the ECOWAS Center for Gender Development (ECGD) of the Social and Gender Affairs Department of the ECOWAS Commission, in collaboration with the UNFPA Regional Office, is organizing a virtual meeting on the theme: “Eliminate Fistula Now: Invest in Quality Health Care, Empower Communities!”

The International Day for the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula was celebrated on May 23, 2022 in almost all ECOWAS member countries affected by obstetric fistula to inform and mobilize stakeholders around prevention and access to care.

To build on these country-level achievements, ECOWAS and UNFPA are having a webinar on Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 10:00 to 13:00 GMT, to establish a baseline for monitoring the progress of fistula programs, capitalize on good practices, and identify challenges and opportunities to improve fistula control by involving all development actors.

For ECOWAS and UNFPA, it is a grave injustice that in the 21st century the poorest, most vulnerable and marginalized women and girls champion the devastating situation of fistula and die giving birth.
