Press Communique on Guinea Bissau
| Abuja, 26 May 2017. The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, notes with consternation the continued political impasse in Guinea Bissau. The ECOWAS Commission is particularly concerned by the impact of the deteriorating socio-economic situation on the citizens of Guinea Bissau.
ECOWAS exhorts all political stakeholders to place national unity above all political interests. To this end, the ECOWAS Commission calls on the President of the Republic and the Speaker of Parliament to exhibit great patriotism by engaging in open dialogue with the critical objective of resolving the ongoing crisis. The ECOWAS Commission reiterates that the only way to bring about lasting stability in the country is the respect of the Conakry Agreement and invites all Guinea-Bissau stakeholders to work towards implementing the terms of the agreement. The ECOWAS commission reaffirms its commitment to supporting the people and Government of Guinea Bissau through this challenging period and remains actively seized of the situation in the country. |
