Towards evaluating ten years experience of electoral assistance in west Africa
Cotonou, Benin’s economic capital will host from 27 to 29 March 2017, a workshop on ten years of electoral assistance in the region and the Biennial General Assembly of Network of Electoral Commissions in West Africa (ECONEC).

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is organizing the meeting under the theme «Ten Years of Electoral Experience in the ECOWAS region: challenges and lessons learnt».

The meeting is expected to assess the electoral process and administration in West Africa in the past decade and deliberate on progress made in certain areas.

 

These are the legal framework and women’s participation, voters’ registration, electoral list, civil registration, financial planning and resource mobilisation.

 

Other items for discussions include collection and transmission of results, electoral logistics, and evaluation of political parties’ contribution in strengthening the electoral process in the ECOWAS region.

 

Papers and speeches will be delivered, including discussions for improved management of conflicts during elections.

 

Within the margins of the workshop, the 2017 General Assembly of the ECONEC will also hold which will feature the election and reorganization of the Network’s Executive Committee.

 

Chairpersons of electoral management committees of ECOWAS Member States, President of the regional organisation’s Commission as well as managers and officials of the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the Commission will be participating in these meetings.

 

Representatives of several international organisations – that are partners of ECOWAS, ECONEC Secretariat staff, national and regional parliamentarians, not to mention representatives of the Internal Affairs Ministries of ECOWAS Member States will also be attending.
